Bombay Bazaar opens in Bradford – all you need to know

PEOPLE gathered at the opening of the “UK’s largest south Asian indoor market” in Bradford on weekend of 18th July. Bombay Bazaar, which features around 140 independent stalls, opened on Saturday on Shearbridge Road.  The launch marks a significant expansion for Bombay Stores, a business that has been serving Bradford shoppers since 1967, transforming the neighbouring former Sagu Motors building.

The Kader family’s story in Bradford stretches back almost six decades, beginning with Abdul and Maryam Kader.  What started as a small family venture eventually grew into Bombay Stores, now run by the third generation of the family.

Speaking at the opening, family member Sabra Kader said the new development was designed to build on that legacy while creating opportunities for others.  She said: “There is naturally a responsibility to carry that legacy forward, but Samir and I are excited to build on everything that has come before us while creating something new with Bombay Bazaar.”

The new bazaar brings together independent traders selling a wide range of products including clothing, jewellery, beauty products, gifts, homeware, toys, sportswear and food.  Family members said the aim was to create a destination where visitors could spend an entire day shopping rather than visiting multiple locations.

Saleem Kader said the expansion was the natural next step for a business that already attracts customers from across the UK.  He explained: “We’ve built up customers from all over the country over the years…now we’re allowing other businesses to come and share in the brand’s value.”

Many of the traders taking part were preparing for their first day of business as crowds began arriving for the launch.

Khurshid Ahmed, owner of Stylowear sports, said it was his first time operating a market stall.

Rasha Gold Plated Jewellery was among those excited to join the new market, with the owner saying she first heard about Bombay Stores while living in Germany.

The launch attracted several local dignitaries and community leaders, including Bradford Council leader Councillor Stephen Place and Bradford West MP Naz Shah.  Cllr Place said: “Bombay Stores is a long-established Bradford company and they’re opening up a big new exciting part of it which is the bazaar.  I’m delighted to be here to help them with the opening ceremony.”  Cllr Place spoke positively about the role of Bradford’s South Asian community in the city’s economy.  He said: “Every community in Bradford is important and we’ve got to come together.  A lot of the Asian community are very, very successful in business and that’s to be celebrated. So yes, I’m delighted to be here.”

Meanwhile, Ms Shah praised the family’s contribution to the city.  She said: “I am so proud of what you’ve achieved and how you’ve inspired people.  She described the business as an example of Bradford entrepreneurship and wished the family continued success as they passed the venture on to future generations.

The new marketplace was also warmly received by shoppers; many of whom said they had been customers of Bombay Stores for years.  One visitor said she had bought wedding outfits for multiple family members from the store and was excited to see the business continue to grow.
